Fairfax County Public Schools is the eleventh largest school system in the nation. Hayfield Secondary School is the oldest secondary school in the Fairfax County Public School system. It opened its doors in 1968 and graduated its first seniors in 1971.The land that Hayfield Secondary sits on was at one time part of George Washington's Mount Vernon estate. Because of a small natural spring underneath the school, the land literally served as a hay field.

Hayfield Secondary School is proud of and grateful for Fairfax County Public Schools’ commitment to excellence in music education. The music directors at Hayfield work together to ensure a superior level of education for all students interested in pursuing musical studies.
