Mrs. Carrie Vien, Director of Orchestras


Carrie Vien is a native of Tulsa, Oklahoma. She began studying the piano at the age of five and the violin shortly after. She also joined the band program in 4th grade on the flute. Mrs. Vien continued studying the piano, violin and flute throughout middle school, high school and college, participating in her school’s orchestra, wind ensemble and marching band.

Mrs. Vien graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of Tulsa and a Master’s of Music in instrumental conducting from Oklahoma State University. While at OSU, she studied conducting with Dr. Joseph Missal and had the opportunity to conduct the Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Chamber Winds and Symphony Orchestra. She has studied piano with Aldo Mancinelli, Dr. Roger Price and Marina Lomazov.

Mrs. Vien has been the Director of Orchestras at Hayfield Secondary School since 2002. During that time, the orchestra program has grown from 140 students to 300 students. In 2007, the Chamber Orchestra performed at the VMEA conference and, since 2002, all orchestras consistently earn superior ratings at District Festivals and National Competitions.

Mrs. Vien lives in Alexandria, VA with her husband, Sam, and cat, Lexi.
